Iran: the ultraconservative Ebrahim Raissi won the presidential election

The ultraconservative Ebrahim Raissi won the Iranian presidential election on Friday in the first round with more than 62.2% of the votes, according to official partial results published late Saturday morning.

Out of 28.6 million ballots counted, Raissi got more than 17,800,000 votes, said Jamal Orf, chairman of the National Election Commission at a press conference in Tehran.

Mr. Orf did not give an estimate of the turnout. The electorate this year includes more than 59.3 million Iranians, aged 18 and over.

According to the partial figures given by Mr. Orf, Major General Mohsen Rezaï, former commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, would finish second with more than 11.5% of the vote, ahead of former Central Bank President Abdolnasser Hemmati (8.3%) and Member of Parliament Amirhossein Ghazizadeh-Hachémi (3.4%).

According to this count, there would be more than 14% of blank or invalid votes.
