The temperature fell below -30°C for the first time in Oslo on Saturday, with -31.1°C recorded at Bjørnholt in the north of the Norwegian capital, according to data from the local weather institute.
This temperature was recorded between 03:00 and 04:00 local time on Friday night at a forestry station in the commune, where the highest temperature recorded in the last 24 hours was -21.9°C.
"The night we've just had has probably been the coldest compared with what's in store for us," said Martin Granerød, an expert at the Meteorological Institute, interviewed by public broadcaster NRK.
In downtown Oslo, temperatures reached -21.5°C overnight.
A cold snap has been gripping northern Europe over the past few days, with a record low of -43.6°C recorded in northern Sweden on Wednesday, the lowest January temperature recorded in the country in 25 years.
