An earthquake of magnitude 7,5 struck Sunday at 05H52 local the North of Peru, announced the American institute USGS, and did not make victims according to the first information of the Peruvian authorities.
The earthquake struck the jungle in the north of the country and a large area near the central coast, said the Peruvian National Institute of Geophysics. The Peruvian Institute placed the epicenter of the earthquake at 98 km east of Santa Maria de Nieva, capital of the province of Condorcanqui in the department of Amazonas, 860 km northeast of Lima near the border with Ecuador, at a depth of 131 km. Santa María de Nieva is located in a sparsely populated area where indigenous people live, on the banks of the Nieva River. In its initial reports, the civil defense indicates that for the moment no casualties have been reported. No tsunami warning was issued by U.S. observers after the earthquake.
The Peruvian Navy ruled out any risk of tsunami. The tremor was felt in almost half of the country, in the north and center, including regions such as Cajamarca, Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, Ancash and in the capital.
