Thirty-five people were killed and 43 injured after a car ploughed into a crowd on Monday evening in Zhuhai, a town in southern China, local police announced on Tuesday.
Authorities had reported an incident of this type as early as Monday, but at the time police had only reported injuries, and videos were subsequently removed from social networks.
On Tuesday, police now announced that a “serious and vicious attack” had taken place at the Zhuahai Sports Center, leaving 35 people dead and 43 injured. The driver, a 62-year-old man, “forced his way in at the wheel of a small SUV and rammed into the city's sports center, knocking down people working out in the indoor aisles”, police said in a statement.
The driver, whose first name is Fan, was arrested while beating himself with a knife “and was sent to hospital for treatment”, according to the same source.
He is in a coma after injuring his neck in particular, and “is in no condition to be questioned”, added the police.
China's largest civil and military air show is currently taking place in the same city.
