Tropical Storm Roslyn, which made landfall Sunday in northwestern Mexico as a Category 3 hurricane, killed at least two people and damaged homes and destroyed roads before a likely evening demise.
We found that a person died in Rosamorada," said Jorge Benito Rodriguez, the secretary of security of the state of Nayarit, on public television.
The Department of Citizen Protection and Fire then advanced that an 80-year-old man had died in the collapse of a heavy structure in his house on the island of Mexcaltitán.
Hurricane Roslyn, then classified as Category 3, had reached the west coast of Mexico, near Santa Cruz, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in the United States.
It hit the vicinity of Santa Cruz (Nayarit State), where 1,200 people live, who live mainly from fishing and agriculture.
After being downgraded to a storm, it was 115 km from the city of Durango, in the north of the country, and had sustained winds of 75 km/h, according to the same source.
The hurricane should "weaken quickly" as it progresses towards the mountainous north of Mexico, said the NHC, before "dissipating late evening or Monday morning.
Property damage, some flooding, falling trees and landslides have been reported by civil protection authorities in the states of Nayarit and Jalisco (west), the most affected by the hurricane.
The floods "do not represent a risk as such", said the director of civil protection of Nayarit, Pedro Núñez.
The resort town of Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco State), which has a population of about 220,000 and is one of the largest cities in the area affected by the hurricane, has begun to survey the damage.
Tropical cyclones hit Mexico every year on its Pacific and Atlantic coasts, usually between May and November.
