French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday, on the sidelines of COP27 in Egypt, that he wanted to "put pressure" on "rich non-European countries", especially the United States, to pay their "share" to help poor countries cope with climate change.
We must have the United States and China who are really at the rendezvous" in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and financial solidarity, he said during an exchange in Sharm el-Sheikh with young Africans and French committed to the climate.
France and Europe are, according to him, on the right trajectory in terms of reducing emissions. But it is necessary that the large emerging countries "get out of coal very quickly", he pleaded.
In addition, while the debate on financial assistance to the most vulnerable countries is growing at COP27, "the Europeans are paying" but "we are the only ones to pay".
It is therefore necessary "to put pressure on the rich non-European countries, to tell them 'you must pay your share'", he added.
