The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said Thursday it has approved Pfizer's anti-Covid pill, which becomes the first orally taken antiviral drug approved in the European Union.
The EMA recommended authorizing Paxlovid for the treatment of Covid-19 in adults who do not require supplemental oxygen and are at increased risk of the disease becoming severe, the European regulator said in a statement.
With the approval of Paxlovid this week, 6 anti-Covid drugs have been approved as part of the EU therapeutic strategy, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides welcomed in a statement.
The United States, Canada and Israel are among a handful of countries that have already given the green light to Pfizer's treatment.
