A world first: Austria decides to re-confine only non-vaccinated people, the situation is serious

Austria's chancellor announced on Sunday that a lockdown for unvaccinated people or those who have not recently contracted Covid-19 will go into effect on Monday, in an attempt to stem the record number of new cases.
The situation is serious we are not taking this measure light-heartedly, but unfortunately it is necessary, said Alexander Schallenberg at a press conference in Vienna.
Approximately 65% of the population has received both doses of the vaccine in Austria, which is below the European average of 67%.
In concrete terms, the persons concerned will not be allowed to leave their homes except for shopping, sports or medical care. The measure applies from the age of 12.
Unannounced checks will be carried out.
The government will evaluate the effect of these restrictions in 10 days, said Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein on Sunday, calling on those who are reluctant to be vaccinated as soon as possible.
The Parliament must approve in the evening the measure, a priori a simple formality.
More than 13,000 new cases were recorded Saturday in this country of 9.8 million people, the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.
