The new series Squid Game keeps on making news. In just a few days after its first broadcast, it has managed to climb to the top of the Netflix charts. In an interview with CNN, its director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, returned to this global phenomenon and confided that he lost six teeth during filming. He explains why.
Squid Game has become a worldwide phenomenon since its release on the Netflix platform on September 17. In just a few days, the series has managed to top the Netflix.
For those who do not know, it is a Korean series in nine episodes, mixing extreme violence and denunciation of economic inequality. It features hundreds of characters participating in a children's game contest to win 45.6 million won, with the losers being killed.
Its director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, recently gave an interview to CNN, looking back at this global phenomenon, explaining how it all started. We've all played these simple, childish games at some point, he told the American media. As an adult now, I wondered what it would be like to go back and play those childhood games again. That was the beginning of the creation of the whole series.
For Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show's story reflects the competitive society we live in today. It's a story of losers, he said. Those who struggle with the difficulties of daily life and are left behind, while the winners keep earning more.
The director also gave some confidences about the shooting, confiding in particular to have lost six teeth because of the stress! The production of this series was indeed very intense for the South-Korean scriptwriter. Writing, producing and directing a series by himself was really a huge task, he admits. But this did not discourage him for the continuation, despite some reluctance: When I think of doing the same thing for season two, I am personally a little worried. There's nothing confirmed yet, but people are so excited that I'm really considering a second season, he told CNN.
