Tesla boss Elon Musk wants to lay off about one in 10 of the automaker's employees, he said in an email to a number of Tesla executives that was also made available to Reuters.
Remarkably, Musk bases his decision on the super bad feeling he has about the global economy, he says in the email. He also thinks that hiring at Tesla should be put on hold.
The electric car maker employs some 99,290 people worldwide. The company has plants in the United States, China and Berlin, where a total of 930,422 cars were produced last year. No one could be reached Friday to comment on possible restructuring plans.
Musk made news again this week with a strong plea to eliminate telecommuting at Tesla. Employees should be in the office at least 40 hours a week, he believes.
Other executives, such as Jamie Dimon of the U.S. investment bank JPMorgan Chase, have also sounded the alarm about the state of the economy. He warned investors this week of an economic hurricane.
