It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Jimmy on the evening of July 6, said his family in a tweet posted on the account of the actor. His manager, Matt DelPiano, confirmed the news to AFP.
Born in New York, in the Bronx district, in 1940, James Caan had played in 1972 Sonny Corleone, the eldest son of Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) in the mythical film of Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather, about the Italian-American mafia.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Sonny Corleone, whose brutal murder in a hail of bullets at a tollbooth became one of the most memorable moments of the film, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.
For one of his other great roles, in Misery, adapted from the book by Stephen King, he played a writer sequestered by an evil woman played by Kathy Bates.
Jimmy was one of the greats. Not only was he one of the best actors our industry has ever seen, but he was funny, loyal, caring and loved, said his manager Matt DelPiano.
Caan also had roles in the films The Loner and Rollerball.
