The fourth-generation Toyota Yaris was named European Car of the Year on Monday, succeeding the Peugeot 208, in a ceremony broadcast online.
The Japanese city car made in Valenciennes (northern France) beat the Fiat 500, Cupra Formentor, Volkswagen ID.3, Skoda Octavia, Land Rover Defender and Citroën C4 in the final.
The first generation of Yaris had already won the election in 2000, prized for its design, modular interior and small engine.
The car of the year 2021 was chosen by a jury of 59 specialized journalists from 22 European countries. This prize has been awarded every year since 1964.
