One person was killed and at least five others injured Saturday in a stabbing near a public library in Vancouver, western Canada, and a suspect was arrested, police and emergency services said.
Six people were hospitalized after the attack, apparently carried out by a lone man whose motives are unknown, the same sources said. One of the victims died, Frank Chang, of the Vancouver crime squad, told AFP, indicating that he did not know at this stage the identities of all the victims. In the early afternoon, several people were stabbed inside and near a public library, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced in a tweet. CTV showed a video on Saturday night of the arrest of the suspect, who appeared to stab himself in the leg before collapsing and being arrested by several officers. Police believed the suspect acted alone and that there was no longer a danger to the public.
Authorities said they were looking for other possible victims. One witness, Sheila Dyson, told CTV she saw a man stab a woman. She said there did not appear to be any connection between the victims and the assailant appeared to strike randomly.
