At least 21 people were injured in an explosion at a hotel in downtown Fort Worth, in the US state of Texas, local authorities reported Monday evening.

The event occurred on Monday afternoon at the Sandman Signature Hotel. The cause is currently unknown, but authorities believe it was caused by a gas leak.

Five victims are in serious condition, one of them particularly critical.

The plant and some adjacent buildings had to be evacuated. Images show a heavy impact, with a large amount of debris thrown into the surrounding streets.
